Japan executes foreign man for the first time in ten years

Japanese justice minister Masako Mori announced the execution today at a press conference, the BBC reports. “It was decided after a very careful assessment,” the minister explained.

16 years in death row

The man, 40-year-old Wei Wei, killed a couple in 2003 and their two children aged 8 and 11 years. The couple ran a clothing store and was killed in their home.

“It was an extremely cruel and brutal case in which the family was murdered for selfish reasons,” the minister explained.

Death cell

Wei Wei admitted the murder, but denied that he was the main culprit. He executed the death with two others. Another accomplice was previously executed in China.

In Japan, a hundred prisoners await their execution. The last time a Chinese man was hanged in Japan was in 2009.

The executions take place in secret and those sentenced to death are not notified in advance of the time of the execution.
