As the spread of the new coronavirus infection (Corona 19) was increasing from Japan to those infected with mutant viruses from the UK, the Japanese government took a strong measure to ban foreigners from entering the country.

According to NHK Broadcasting in Japan on the 27th, 3881 new corona19 confirmed cases occurred in Japan on the previous day, approaching the 4,000 level, recording the highest number of confirmed cases per day for four consecutive days. The number of new confirmed cases in Japan rose to 3,270 on the 23rd, surpassing the previous record, to 3740 on the 24th and 3831 on the 25th. The cumulative confirmed number has increased to 21,9146, and the number of severely ill patients is also 654, the most since the start of the Corona 19 incident.

It is also of concern that seven people infected with the UK mutant virus have been confirmed in Japan for two days on the 25th and 26th. A woman in her twenties without a history of staying in the UK was also found to be infected by her family returning from the UK. The mutant virus is known to be 70% more contagious than the existing Corona 19 virus.

As the situation got worse, the Japanese government took measures to ban new entry of foreigners in principle. The Japanese government urgently announced on the night of the 26th that it would temporarily suspend new entry of foreigners from all countries and regions from the 28th to the end of January next year. It has also decided to stop taking special measures to ease entry restrictions, which conditionally exempt Japanese and foreign residents from quarantine by two weeks when returning or re-entry (for foreigners) after a short-term overseas business trip. However, it has decided to continue to allow’business traffic’ to 11 countries and regions, including Korea. Concerns about the Tokyo Olympics, which have been postponed to July next year, are also emerging again. From the beginning of this month, with the Tokyo Olympics in mind, the Japanese government has considered permitting small group tours for foreigners and even considering allowing tourists entering the country to use public transportation to watch the Olympics, but it turned to raise the entry threshold again.
