Janusz Kłosiński: The Rise and Fall of a Popular Polish Actor During the Polish People’s Republic

Janusz Kłosiński was one of the most popular actors of the Polish People’s Republic. He played in many cult productions, including: in the film “Ogniomistrz Kaleń”, which premiered on October 12, 1961. After the introduction of martial law, Kłosiński was asked by the government of the Polish People’s Republic for support. His television appearance was the beginning of the end. Kłosiński lost the support not only of viewers, but also of other actors and actresses. On the street he heard a cry: traitor “I wish they would bury me where they bury nameless vagabonds” – he said at the end of his life

He actually became an actor by accident. “I read on the tram that there were additional exams for the acting school. I thought I would go and try it. I learned Staff’s poems. I still don’t know if I would have passed if it weren’t for Jacek Woszczerowicz. He told me to play a madman who suddenly has an attack of rage. “I think that’s why I was accepted. I finished school in 1948.” — he recalled in one of the interviews.

Janusz Kłosiński. Who was “Chernousov” from “Four Tank Men”?

He was born in 1920 in Łódź. At first, he wanted to become a doctor, but his studies at the University of Warsaw were interrupted by World War II. He was crossing occupied Poland on a bicycle – during which he contracted dysentery, and his meeting with a Soviet soldier was saved by… a volume of Mickiewicz kept in his backpack. The Russian associated the Polish bard as Pushkin’s friend – and he let Kłosiński continue his journey. The later screen star worked physically and took care of his sister, a young widow with a small child. During the war, Kłosiński fell in love. In 1943, Wiesława Hańska became his wife. On the day of the liberation of Radom, where they lived, their daughter was born. Grażyna.

Janusz Kłosiński gave up his dreams of surgery, but decided to try something else. He took the PWST exam and the madman’s attack that the committee ordered him to act out made such an impression that the 26-year-old was accepted.

After graduating, the actor began a career that he developed over the next several dozen years. He starred in such popular productions as “Four Tank Men and a Dog”, “Janosik”, “How I Unleashed World War II”, “The Forty-Year-Old”. In the meantime, he became a father once again – he welcomed another daughter, Joanna.

Janusz Kłosiński. “I have been connected with Christ all my life”

Kłosiński did not hide the fact that he supported the government of the People’s Republic of Poland. It was said that he was Gierek’s favorite actor. It did not harm his work or relationships with his colleagues. Everything changed shortly after the introduction of martial law. Many actors opposed the new reality, but Kosiński, at the request of the deputy minister of culture, appeared on television and said that “enough of the strikes and the disintegration of the country recognized by all countries in the world.” He explained that he considered the introduction of martial law to be “an end to the unjustified riot.”

The actor quickly felt the consequences of this decision. In the same month, when he appeared on the stage of the National Theater, he was “applauded” – when Kłosiński tried to say his lines, the audience burst into applause. He knew this would happen to him every time he stepped on stage. He realized it was over. His friends turned away from him, and on the street he heard: “traitor”. He retired from acting. He last appeared on screen in 2007, in Tomasz Wiszniewski’s film “Everything will be fine”.

He spoke openly about his last will. “I would like my body to be handed over to some medical institution and to be buried where they bury nameless vagabonds. All my life I have been associated with the figure of Christ, who was a wimp who was not allowed into salons,” he confessed.

Kłosiński died on November 8, 2017, a week before his 97th birthday. His last wish was fulfilled – it is still unknown where his body rests.
