Janssen vaccine removed from vaccination program for younger groups

De Jonge emphasizes that people who have already received the Janssen vaccine need not worry. Even people who already have an appointment to receive the Janssen vaccine can continue to do so if they wish. They can also ask for a different vaccine.

Special Audiences

For groups that benefit from just one shot, the Janssen vaccine can still be used. This concerns, for example, homeless people, soldiers or sailors.

Anyone who is still vaccinated from now on will receive Pfizer or Moderna, because the AstraZeneca vaccine is also only used for second shots.

Rare Side Effects

The Health Council advised young people to preferably give a shot with Moderna or Pfizer, because these vaccines have a higher effectiveness and fewer drawbacks than the vaccines from AstraZeneca and Janssen.

Both Janssen’s and AstraZeneca’s vaccines have been reported on a rare serious side effect: thrombosis in combination with a low platelet count. In young people, the risk of becoming seriously ill from the corona virus is small.

That is why the risk of the rare side effect of these vaccines weighs all the more, says the Health Council.

Sufficient vaccines

The Health Council emphasizes that the Janssen vaccine is sufficiently effective and safe. According to the council, the cabinet has the freedom to make this choice because there are sufficient vaccines available and because the number of corona infections is relatively low.

There will be an opportunity for people who want to take Janssen after all. But Janssen is no longer part of the ‘picking the pot’ for different years.
