WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen’s first visit to China will aim to renew ties between the world’s two largest economies.

US officials have said they expect “frank” discussions when Janet Yellen travels to China July 6-9.

Relations between Beijing and Washington were further strained after China announced on Tuesday its decision to limit exports of rare metals used in particular for the manufacture of chips and electric vehicles.

No major breakthrough is expected, but Janet Yellen will work to open new channels of communication and coordination on economic issues, according to US officials.

She will also remind her Chinese counterparts that any move to provide lethal aid to Russia – in violation of sanctions imposed on Russia over the war in Ukraine – could trigger sanctions against Chinese entities, a senior official said. of the American administration.

Janet Yellen will also insist on the need to work together with Beijing on the issues of climate change, pandemic preparedness and over-indebtedness, said a US Treasury official.

Janet Yellen’s visit to China comes a few weeks after US Secretary of State Antony Blinken traveled to Beijing.
