James Webb Telescope reveals that rocky planets can form in extreme environments

Los Angeles, December 1, 2023 (Xinhua) – An international team of astronomers used NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope to provide the first observations of water and other molecules in the highly radiant interior of the rocky planet formation of a disk, in one of the most extreme environments in our galaxy, according to what was reported. NASA on Friday.

These results suggest that terrestrial planetary formation conditions can occur in a wider range of possible environments than previously thought, according to NASA.

Understanding the impact of the environment on planet formation is important for scientists to gain insight into the diversity of different types of exoplanets.

“Webb is the only telescope with the spatial resolution and sensitivity to study planet-forming disks in massive star-forming regions,” said team leader Maria Claudia Ramirez-Taños of the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy in Germany.

The astronomers aim to characterize the physical properties and chemical composition of regions of the rocky planet-forming disks in the Crayfish Nebula using a medium-resolution spectrometer on the James Webb Telescope’s mid-infrared instrument.

The James Webb Space Telescope is the world’s leading space science observatory. The telescope helps solve mysteries in the solar system, look beyond distant worlds around other stars, and explore mysterious structures and the origins of the universe, according to NASA.
