James Webb Space Telescope: Stunning Images of Nascent Stars

The James Webb Space Telescope celebrated a year since its first published images with a dramatic look at nascent stars amid red, ocher and white clouds. A new image released Wednesday by the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) shows 50 young stars with masses less than or similar to the Sun’s, about 390 light-years from Earth.

“Prepare to be amazed,” NASA chief Bill Nelson said on Twitter, comparing the new image to an impressionist masterpiece.

Darkest in the image are the regions where dense dust surrounds the forming protostars, according to NASA. Shown in red are the opposing jets of hydrogen that are created when the star first breaks through its envelope of cosmic dust. In the lower half of the image, the only captured star is significantly larger than the Sun, which has dug a luminous “cave” out of the surrounding dust.

Klaus Pontoppidan, who was previously involved in the Webb Telescope project, explained that the new image makes it possible to examine in detail a very short period of the star’s life cycle. “Our own Sun went through a similar phase a very long time ago, and thanks to technology we can now see the beginning of another star’s story,” he said.

NASA first pictures she showed the world from the telescope for the first time exactly one year ago. Then there was a collapsed star, a galaxy in a whirlwind dance, or a nebula full of stars.

The James Webb Space Telescope, worth ten billion dollars (245 billion crowns), is an American NASA project with wider international participation. The telescope was launched into space in 2021 by an Ariane 5 rocket from the Kourou Cosmodrome in French Guiana, reaching its final position 1.5 million kilometers from Earth in January 2022.

Since then, the Webb Telescope has recorded a wide range of cosmic phenomena and phenomena, from the planets of our Solar System to glimpses into the far reaches of space. The most majestic images included, for example, a new view of the so-called Pillars of Creation in the Eagle Nebula, the heart of the spiral galaxy Messier 74 (M74) and the star cluster NGC 346.
