A German doctor has been jailed for two years and nine months for illegally issuing exemption statements for masks. More than 4,000 unentitled Germans received a statement not requiring them to wear a face mask in places where it was mandatory.
Most of the people who have received such a statement from the doctor have never been examined by her or even seen, according to German media.
In his defense, the doctor said that wearing masks is bad for your health. During the corona crisis, you have repeatedly spoken out publicly against the corona measures in general and against the obligation to wear masks in particular.
The doctor worked in Weinheim in Baden-Württemberg and earned thousands of euros from making the statements. That money, a total amount of 28,000 euros, has been recovered. Furthermore, he cannot practice his profession for three years after serving his sentence.
The 59-year-old doctor’s lawyer says he will appeal.
Protestants
An employee of the firm has been charged with complicity. Since it was not proven that she voluntarily contributed to the illegal provision of the statements, she was only fined.
At the time of the verdict, dozens of people protested outside the courthouse. They carried placards with slogans like: “Human dignity has been violated.”
