BELMONT PARK. He has been one of the NHL’s hottest goalies in recent weeks, and during Saturday’s visit to Long Island, Jacob Markström was about to crown another big game with the first goal of his career as well.

– It was a bit embarrassing, you don’t get many situations like that. I have to stick to stopping the pucks instead, says the 34-year-old Calgary star with a smile after the 5-2 victory against the Islanders.

“I haven’t seen Markström this good since I came to the club,” said Calgary Flames coach Ryan Huska after the victory in Newark last night, and he won’t revise that opinion after Saturday’s matinee performance at UBS Arena on Long Island.

The 34-year-old from Gävle was responsible for another excellent effort and helped the Western Canadian club to its fourth straight victory with 35 blocked shots.

Yes, not only with them, by the way. He contributed to defender MacKenzie Weegar’s hat trick as well – with an assist.

– I just put the puck behind the goal and made sure Weegar got it, it was his day today, says “Markan” when we meet him in the dressing room afterwards.

The afternoon could also have been crowned with a classic goal. Isles coach Patrick Roy pulled his goalie, Semyon Varlamov, in the closing minutes and on two occasions Jacob tried to join the elite of NHL goaltenders-turned-scorers.

– It was a bit embarrassing, he continues with a wry smile.

– You don’t get many opportunities when the other team takes out the goalkeeper and you lead with three goals and now I had two chances, but with the same result both times. I have to stick to stopping the pucks instead.

The visitors from the north-west still took a reassuring victory and thus have four straight under their belt – and thus finally a real hang in the dash after a slightly shaky autumn.

– It is easy to say that we had a lot of rebounds against us and a lot of post forward, but it feels a little like that, says “Markan”.

– Now we have brought in some young guys who have contributed with good energy and at the same time I think we are pulling in the same direction in a different way.

In Detroit, it seemed for a long time that Elias Pettersson would lead Vancouver to revenge after the debacle against Boston the day before yesterday.

Admittedly, a Lucas Raymond looked in a display mood already after 45 seconds to give the home team a 1-0 lead, but in the second period “Petey” turned the event around with a goal and two assists.

In the final act, however, the Red Wings managed to come back and equalize, and in extra time, defender Jake Walman was able to decide – on a penalty.

– It was a better effort than the last time, but we would definitely like to have the third period back, says the midfielder, now fifth in the scoring league with a total of 68 points.

Buffalo suffered another heavy loss at home to St Louis, this time 3-1 after Calle Rosén scored a goal in his first appearance with the Blues of the season. And in Montreal, Dallas won 3-2 over the Canadiens.
