Jaap Stam was approached by Ajax last winter to start as an assistant coach. The former coach of Jong Ajax, Reading, PEC Zwolle, Feyenoord and FC Cincinnati let go of that offer, he says in an interview with Football news.

Stam has now been without a club for almost two years. That is his own choice, he emphasizes. “In the past I have done enough things that seemed fun in advance. In the end, it is not what you count on or what you discussed. So if something comes up, it must be really fun,” explains the former top defender.
“The offer was quite varied,” says Stam about the offers he received since his departure from the United States. But: “I never once had the idea: I’m going to get in here.”

Stam also had that feeling when Klaas Jan Huntelaar called last winter. Ajax was looking for an extra right hand for the then head coach Alfred Schreuder. “In the end, that did not happen because I called it off myself, because I did not like it. If I have to work with a head coach, then it must be guided in the right direction.”
