“Itzia, Tango y Cacao”: Flora Martínez’s Award-Winning Film Exalts Colombian Culture and Agriculture

‘Itzia, Tango and Cacao’ is the first film directed by Flora Martínez. This production has already been awarded internationally and will be in Bogotá cinemas starting next October 18.

“I had a need and that was for the message of this film to be something that I would also feel proud of. I feel that I have a debt with national cinema, that is why I want to start making films that exalt our Colombia, our people, our agriculture,” said Flora in Signal de la Mañana.

The film tells the story of Itzia, a peasant woman, cocoa farmer, with hearing disabilities, played by Flora Martínez. The film was filmed in San Vicente de Chucurí (Santander) and Zipaquirá (Cundinamarca) and shows the importance of cocoa for Colombia.

“It was a year of preparation to understand the world of hearing impairment. Sometimes we feel like we already have it all, we take many things for granted. Itzia is a woman with a lot of sensitivity, who can hear things that we listeners don’t hear,” said the director and protagonist of the film.

This story, described by Martínez as a story of magical realism, has an important presence of the bandoneon, an instrument that gives it the sounds of this literary movement. ‘Itzia, Tango y Cacao’ speaks of a sixth sense, of magic that is not palpable, but is present all the time. The production has already had two presentations, one was for Colombian exhibitors.

“I was very nervous about how they would receive it, but they liked it a lot. I believe that we have the need to see ourselves reflected positively on the big screen. I had a press pass for the deaf community. For me it was very important that they saw the film and felt that they endorsed it. Also, I wanted to know if they needed an interpreter, and they didn’t. They felt the production was their own, they were very excited. That was what I wanted, to give a voice to those 500,000 deaf people who live in Colombia and all their families,” added the director.

In Colombia, the film will be available in the different cinemas in Bogotá. ‘Itzia, Tango y Cacao’, was awarded with the ‘Best Actress’ and ‘Best Film’ awards at the European Cinematography Awards and participates in official festival selections in Japan, India, London, Canada and the United States.
