It’s not science fiction, it’s a revolution. Artificial intelligence will detect offsides in Qatar

FIFA hid a technological miracle at this year’s World Cup in Qatar. Offside situations will be assessed by artificial intelligence, which will immediately communicate everything to the referees and fans. The water carriers looked into how it would all work.

Just a quick reminder. At the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, FIFA used technology to decide matches for the first time. Back then, it was about “goal line technology”, which can determine whether the ball has crossed the goal line with its entire volume. And whether a regulation goal was scored. But that was just a foreshadowing.

Four years later, VAR, a video referee system, appeared at the World Cup in Russia, with the help of which the assessment of various controversial situations moved to the next level.

And also for this year’s World Cup in Qatar, FIFA has hidden a small technological miracle. And that’s the new system for assessing offside situations, which has been successfully tested in recent months. And FIFA decided to use it even at the most watched tournament of the year, i.e. the World Championship.

FIFA successfully tested its “offside” innovation at the Arab Cup directly in Qatar and also at the Club World Cup in the United Arab Emirates. So how exactly is this supposed to work?

Sensors and cameras

“A total of twelve cameras will be placed directly under the roof of each stadium, which will record all football players,” begins the explanation of Karel Tvaroh, until recently the reserve defender of Sparta Prague.

“These cameras can create a total of 50 frames per second. For each soccer player, they will occupy 29 data points distributed over those parts of his body that are relevant for assessing the offside position,” explains Tvaroh.

“In cooperation with the sensor, which will be built directly into the ball for the first time in history, it should be a surgically precise tandem, with the help of which the determination of offsides will become much easier and, above all, more fair in the final. Only the sensor in the ball itself will provide, with exaggeration, perhaps a million images in an instant,” adds the footballer.

“The way controversial situations are presented should also change. If the player is waved offside, the spectator in the stadium will see an accurate 3D model of the entire situation on the light screen and make a picture for himself,” the protagonists of the Water Carriers praised the attempt at a very transparent presentation.

FIFA calls the system semi-automatic. It will not happen that some robots wave offside. The technical system “just” communicates its evaluation of the situation to the referees. In any case, the final verdict will be in the hands of a person.

Offside judgments are forecast to be significantly reduced. Are you wondering what all this technological change could bring? Play the latest Water Bearers and learn a lot more.

And what else will you hear about?

Karel Tvaroh spoke openly about why he decided to end his professional football career at the age of 23 and go down the path of journalism.

In the studio, the trio discussed the latest changes in the Spartan squad and the final nomination of Letenský for the Austrian training camp with their own thoroughness. The increased attention of the Bearers did not escape the potential Spartan hopes that could gain ground in the future. And what impression did the new coach Priske and his colleagues make? That’s not all the new Water Carriers are talking about.

As tradition dictates, there is also a probe into the English landscape, in which a fairytale contract was concluded. Wondering where? Watch the latest episode of The Water Bearers and find out. You’ll also hear news about Cristiano Ronaldo, who would probably like to ditch the move from his once-beloved Manchester.

In the betting window with Fortuna, among other things, the Bearers try to guess who will win the Women’s European Championship, which is being held in England this year.
