Performance to forget for‘Italiawho greets the Rugby World Cup with a vigorous and final defeat, not reacting afterwards the knockout against New Zealand. The France overwhelms an insecure team capable of becoming dangerous only in very few moments of the match: at Parc OL it is 60-7 for the Transalpines, who win Pool A. For Italy, who finish third and qualify for the next World Cup, another heavy negative result.

The wound opened by the defeat against New Zealand (96-17) was not healed by Italy, which suffered another unappealable and very harsh knockout against France. The Azzurri say goodbye to the World Cup by losing 60-7 against the hosts, who thus finish first in Pool A ahead of the All Blacks. The match immediately started badly for the national team, who conceded their first try after three minutes: Penaud broke through the blue defensive lines, Ramos converted and it was 7-0. In the eighth minute it was already 10-0 for the transalpine selection, who struck again with a free kick. Italy doesn’t react and is imprecise, with continuous offsides and the first touch won after eleven minutes. The Italian offensive maneuver brings no results, while France is lethal: Bielle-Biarrey and Ramos score two more tries, perfectly converted for the 24-0. In the 34th minute there would be the first Italian goal, but the TMO cancels it due to a foul (head to head) by the scorer Ferrari. There is time to see France score again, who close the first half at 31-0 with the winning maul and Penaud’s second try.

Zuliani and Fusco came on for Italy in the second half, but they were unable to defend themselves from the opponents’ attacks. Jalibert breaks free and scores another try, while the Azzurri make a mistake at 5m and throw away a promising move. France changes and is immediately effective with the new arrivals: Mauvaka scores the sixth try, converted by Ramos for 45-0, and gets his “double” in the 75th minute (Jaminet misses). In between, another French score for Moefana and the only Italian try: Zuliani found it after a long offensive action, finalized in the 70th minute. Allan converted and the Azzurri scored seven points, but in the final the French rounded off the score again: in addition to the aforementioned Moefana scoring, Jaminet’s kick arrived in the 80th minute. France wins 60-7, inflicting a harsh defeat on Italrugby. Kieran Crowley’s adventure as coach ends with third place and qualification for the next World Cup. From January 1st, the Argentinian Gonzalo Quesada, former Albiceleste legend and former Stade Français coach, will be on the Italian bench.
