The report was released when over 1,400 new infections were confirmed in Italy in 24 hours. That’s the most since the beginning of May.
In the summary of the epidemic monitoring from August 17 to 23, 1,374 active coronavirus outbreaks were reported, 490 of which are new.
In the opinion of the authors of the document, the growing tendency may put the health service on a “severe test”.
The report said Italian residents must continue to “rigorously” comply with all orders to reduce the risk of further coronavirus infections.
Both institutions also called on citizens to respect the government’s regulations regarding the quarantine regime.
The institute and the ministry stressed that in the previous week of August an increase in the number of new infections was recorded in 16 out of 20 Italian regions.
This increase, as noted, cannot be attributed solely to the import of the virus from abroad. This month, numerous cases of SARS-CoV-2 have been registered among tourists returning to Italy from Spain, Greece, Croatia and Malta.
