Italian Economy Minister Freni Discusses Growth and Debt at Ambrosetti Workshop in Cernobbio

“We are around there” at 1% growth “let’s wait for the Def and see. I would like to say, as I have said for the past three years since I have been at the Mef, that the Mef has rarely made a mistake in the calculations in recent years”explained Freni, on the sidelines of the Ambrosetti workshop in Cernobbio.
As for the debt-to-GDP ratio, we must never “resign ourselves, we must take all conditions into account and we must, as we said, make bread with the flour we have.”
“Certainly the debt-GDP ratio is influenced” by some dynamics, including that of “building bonuses” but “we have to deal with what we have found and we have to do our best as we are doing to limit this influence.”

From 2021 to today “we have spent over 200 billion, certainly above the 210 billion in construction bonuses” more than the resources that the Pnrr will “cube”, equal to 196 billion euros. This was said by the undersecretary of the Mef, Federico Freni, speaking at the Ambrosetti workshop in Cernobbio.

“The Pnrr will account for 196 billion in expenditure between now and 2026, of which 123 will be debt” while “the building bonus complex cost over 200 billion”. “We must have full understanding of this, when we praise the impact of the Pnrr on the country we must know that we have spent much more on building bonuses” and “in the end it is always debt”. For this reason “we need to plan and control public spending in a sensible way because the debt is there and we cannot hide it under the carpet and it weighs down the country’s growth and interest expenditure”.
