It is often difficult for GPs to distinguish corona and heart complaints

Precisely now that the corona measures are being relaxed and people are coming into contact with each other again, it is of vital importance, according to the foundation, that GPs see who is at risk of serious illness due to the virus.

‘More knowledge needed’

“We urgently need more knowledge about the best treatment of cardiovascular patients with corona,” says general practitioner and researcher Frans Rutten (UMC Utrecht). “We want to know better how to treat infected patients at an early stage, in order to prevent serious complaints and possibly hospitalization.”

It does not look at patients who are in the hospital, but at people who report complaints to the doctor. For example, chest tightness or pain indicates heart or vascular problems, but also occurs with a corona infection. It is also being investigated whether complications can be detected faster, so that the correct treatment can start earlier.

More risk

The new research should give cardiovascular patients a better understanding of their personal risk of coronavirus complications. It is already known that the group is more at risk, but much important information is still lacking about individual differences.

“Many cardiovascular patients live with great concerns and questions, which we as general practitioners do not yet have a good answer to,” says Rutten. “That is why we started this new research. We need to know quickly how we as GPs can best treat cardiovascular patients with corona. ”
