Stamp for the Gospel of Jersika – 750

“Jersika Gospel”, also called “Latvian Gospel”, is one of the oldest monuments of Latvian culture and history, which belongs to both Latvian and Russian culture.

This medieval manuscript, completed on March 23, 1270, was created in ancient Russian by the book rewriter Jurģis (Georgijs). The personality and talent of the book rewriter Jurģis developed in ancient Jersika, on the banks of the Daugava, which has been mentioned many times in historical sources and is surrounded by legends, and was not only an important center of crafts and trade, but also of spiritual culture.

Today, the ancient manuscript is kept among the rarities in the collections of the Russian State Library Rumyantsev, which once belonged to the prominent patron Count Nikolai Rumyantsev. In 2014, the Latvian Orthodox Church published the world’s first facsimile edition of the Latvian Gospel.

The postage stamp and envelope “Jersikas Gospel – 750” will initially be available at Riga 10th post office at 14/43 Elizabetes Street, Riga 50th post office in shopping center “Origo”, Stacijas Square 2, post office “Sakta” at 32 Brīvības Boulevard, Riga, as well as in the Latvijas Pasts e-store.
