The Israeli military announced on the 18th local time that it would establish the area near al-Mawasi, a small Bedouin town on the southern coast of the Gaza Strip, as a ‘humanitarian zone’.
Israeli military authorities said that “humanitarian aid from the international community will be provided” through this zone.
This measure comes amid pressure from the international community to open the Rafah border for Gaza residents who are facing a humanitarian crisis, including depletion of food and medical aid.
However, the Israeli military repeatedly urged that “there will be a large-scale bombing soon” and that “residents in the northern part of the Gaza Strip should evacuate to the south.”
