Israel also carried out attacks earlier this week after ‘fire balloons’ were launched from the Gaza Strip. The army says it holds Hamas responsible for all attacks from that Palestinian enclave on the coast. Israel and Hamas fought an 11-day bloody conflict last month. This was accompanied by large-scale rocket attacks and bombings. More than 250 people were killed in the Gaza Strip and 13 in Israel.
That conflict ended with a ceasefire after mediation by Egypt, but that is now under pressure again. An Israeli delegation in Cairo is said to have warned that the May military operation could continue if the balloon attacks are not stopped. Hamas has reportedly made it clear that it does not consider such incidents a violation of the ceasefire.
