Is the Stuttgart Christmas Garden environmentally friendly? – SWR current

The “Christmas Garden” in Stuttgart’s Wilhelma is intended to enchant with its light installations. The start is Thursday. But how much electricity does the sea of lights consume?

Under the motto “The magical journey begins at sunset…”, this year’s Christmas Garden will take place from 17 November 2022 to 15 January 2023 at the Wilhelma in Stuttgart. The organizers expect around 130,000 visitors.

Christmas Garden: nests of lights, flashes and illuminated trees

In view of the current energy crisis, local organizer Christian Doll champions the event with 60 glowing balls on the “Moonlight Meadow,” a tree-lined avenue decorated with nearly 500 light nests and illuminated redwoods. Total energy consumption is 362 kilowatt hours per day. Over the entire period, this corresponds to the consumption of three or four households per year.

“Sitting at home with the family watching Netflix takes more energy to stream than watching the family Christmas garden.”

The entire lighting has been almost completely converted to energy-saving LEDs. At the moment there are more than 90 percent, according to the organizer, who claim to use only green electricity.

Taking a little break is important, especially in times of crisis. No two “Christmas Gardens” are the same, the organizers have announced in advance. This year, for example, a so-called “Field of Light” danced with picturesque sounds in front of the flamingo plant. A mystical hologram hovers in the mammoth forest. There is also mood music.
