The new series ‘One Day’ scores very well on Netflix. The series is in the streaming giant’s top 10. Fans are now wondering en masse: is the story of Dexter and Emma true?
One Day is about Dexter and Emma, who spend the night and the next day together after a school party. From then on, they see each other on the same day every year, July 15, and this continues for years. The series is keeping people busy and fans are asking the question: is it a true story?
The series is based on the book of the same name by David Nicholls. It is a fictional story, but Nicholls has included events from his own life in the book. During his studies, the idea for the story starts to bubble up when he reads the book Tess of the d’Urbervilles is reading. It contains a passage about how the main character writes down important dates that are relevant every year, such as a birthday. David then thinks about having a first date and an annual anniversary on the day of that first date.
Main character Emma is in many ways inspired by David himself. Like her, the author studied English and Drama at a university in his younger years. Emma and David both enjoy acting. And Emma wants to be a writer – you don’t have to do deep research to see the similarity between Emma and her creator in that respect.
In addition, the story takes place in Edinburgh, a city of which David has fond memories; he lived there for a summer during his youth. Unlike Emma, he himself studied in Bristol.
There are also differences. For example, the characters in the series discover Arthur’s Seat, a hill that offers a beautiful view of the city. David himself did not climb that hill during the time he spent in Edinburgh. “When I lived there, I never climbed the hill myself. I didn’t dare.”
But he has already taken a look at the top several times. According to him, fans now climb Arthur’s Seat every year on July 15, the day that is central to the book and series. David thinks that is a huge honor. The book was also made into a film in 2011, also under the name One Day. Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess star in it.
