Is the mobile tariff really unlimited? The CTU steps on the operators

As the CTU informed in its monitoring report, it has recently focused on the marketing practices of operators. Now they want to put an end to offers with hooks.

“As far as voice and SMS services are concerned, the CTU will no longer accept the marketing designation ‘unlimited’ in the case of tariffs that are limited in volume in any way, despite the fact that operators notify this restriction in their contractual conditions,” said Tereza Meravá from press department of the CTU.

In practice, this should mean that a limited offer will be hidden for unlimited services. Typically, these are tariffs with unlimited calls and SMS messages, which are associated with an Internet connection that is limited by a limit.

“Regarding the offer of unlimited data services, the CTU focuses on assessing the offers of individual operators, among other things, to reveal other practices, which in turn may prevent users from using these services really indefinitely, when operators really offer a seemingly unlimited volume however, when using this service, the connection speed is so low that it makes it impossible for users to make full use of Internet services, ”Meravá said.

At least 2 Mbps

This is because operators usually offer unlimited internet, which slows down significantly when a certain data limit is used up. Thus, users still have access to a worldwide computer network, however, for example, only at a speed of 256 kb / s, which is not comfortable for many online activities.

Therefore, the CTU will require that offers marked as “unlimited dating” always offer a speed of at least 2 Mb / s or higher.

However, the Authority emphasized that the circumstances of specific unrestricted services will be assessed on a case-by-case basis, taking into account specific circumstances.
