(Elbil24):

Recently, Mercedes showed off its latest concept car – the Vision One Eleven. The car, which is among other things inspired by the legendary Mercedes SL 300 from 1955, will show some of the technology that Mercedes envisages in its cars going forward. Most striking are the car’s height of just 1.17 meters and the gull-wing doors. But also when it comes to the interior, the engineers think completely new.

Do you have an electric car from 2018 or 2019? Then you should take action soon!

Like in a plane

The steering wheel in the concept car is square with so-called Yoke steering. This means that there is no longer any physical connection between the steering wheel and the wheels. The steering column has been replaced with electronic signals of the steering wheel movements. Modern aircraft have already for many years used such a Steer-by-Wire system for transmitting signals from the pilot in the cockpit to the rudders on the wings.

In a car, this should have several advantages – also when it comes to road safety, the engineers believe.

More traffic safe

Yoke steering should provide more precise and faster steering response and it means that it is no longer possible to steer the car with a relaxed hand on top of the round steering wheel. It is not particularly traffic safe. With a square steering wheel, the driver must neatly hold the steering wheel with two hands in an optimal “quarter-to-three” position. In addition, the driver gets a better view of the instruments on the dashboard.

IT’S A YOKE: Tesla Model S and X now come with a completely new steering wheel. It not only creates excitement. Video: Elbil24.no Show more

Are we to believe reports in the German media that AutoBildMercedes plans to adopt this steering wheel in its new cars that will be launched sometime after 2025. It will probably only appear in electric EQS when a new generation of this flagship is ready.

Do we want it?

Already last year, Tesla announced that it wanted to equip its new S and X models with such a square steering wheel and electronic transmission of control signals to the wheels. However, the American car manufacturer has put in reverse and offers a square steering wheel only as an option.

Lexus and Toyota have also announced that they will come up with such steering wheels and steering quite quickly.

Whether the customers want this, however, is a completely different matter.
