Is returning to face-to-face classes safe?

The parents are held against those indicated by the SSecretary of Public Education (SEP) of the back to face-to-face classes for the next one school cycle 2021-2022 in spite of the third wave of infections of Covid-19 in the country.

After President Andrés Manuel López Obrador indicated that the schools and the return in person of the country’s basic education students for August 30, parents, teachers and students have filed complaints about the measure. The tension has increased after in Mexico there was a record increase in cases of Covid-19, and it is in the third wave of infections. Added to this is the appearance of the delta variant, which mostly affects young people.

Also to this is added that there is still no date scheduled to vaccinate the underage population in the country. Despite this, the school authorities and the SEP itself have insisted on returning to classes to support the mental health of minors and encourage physical activity, as well as academic lag.

Although it has been demonstrated before the WHO that children are less likely to show symptoms before Covid-19 and have a lower risk of being aggravated by the disease, there is evidence that shows that minors are contagious agents of the virus. For this reason, parents and teachers are fearful that activities will resume and that sources of contagion could be created among children and young people in schools in the country. Since children are the main carriers of the virus, and they can infect their families, teachers and classmates.

However, according to John Hopkins University there is a high risk of contracting and getting sick from Covid-19 in the classrooms, They point out that even if there is evidence that there are not so many serious issues, there are risks especially in children who suffer from heart problems, obesity, diabetes and asthma.

Similarly, experts affirm that the Delta variant is more contagious in nature, so the opening of schools could lead to a rapid spread of this population that is not vaccinated. At the same time, they reiterate that due to the novelty of this new strain, the conditions it has on the health of girls and boys are still unknown. So they insist that it is best to take care of them and maintain hygiene and care measures at home.
