Brigitte, the wife of French President Emmanuel Macron, is taking legal action against spreaders of rumors that she is transsexual and born a man, her lawyer was quoted as saying by Reuters.
Proponents of conspiracy theories, anti-vaxers and the far right have attacked Brigitte Macron on social media after a far-right publication published such a rumor in the autumn.
She is rumored to have been born Jean-Michel Tronyo. Tronyo is her maiden name.
The rumors surfaced before next year’s presidential election, although Emmanuel Macron has not yet announced he will run. So there are speculations that this is an ugly campaign.
Legal action has been launched against several people after rumors intensified after a video was posted on social media on December 10, lawyer Jean Enoshi told Reuters.
