Is It Legal to Bring Outside Food to the Movies in Spain? A Look at the Rules and Regulations

Going to the cinema has traditionally been one of the favorite cultural activities of Spaniards, despite the fact that for various reasons in recent years the percentage of people who go to theaters to enjoy the premiere of films has become smaller and smaller.

For a few years now, going to the movies has begun to become a casual whim rather than a recreational activity that we can usually do. Despite the fact that offers and discounts are being added, ticket prices have been increasing progressively, a differential factor to which other impediments are added such as the high prices established for food in Spanish venues.

Popcorn, fast food and soft drinks are foods that we associate with watching a movie, even more so if we do it on the big screen. And it may be because of this tradition that buying food at the cinema costs a lot and makes viewers wonder if it is really worth it.

It is increasingly common for those who go to the cinema to take food from home or, failing that, buy it in other establishments, despite the fact that in many theaters we usually see messages that prohibit access with products from outside the cinema, hiding mostly in that cinemas have bar service.

Can you bring outside food to the movies?

The Spanish Association for Food Safety and Nutrition (AESAN), an organization dependent on the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, established in a report carried out in 2017 that “prohibiting the entry of food and drink purchased outside the movie theater is illegal and abusive.”

This statement is due to the fact that the main activity of cinemas is not the sale of food or bar service, therefore by allowing their consumption in their theaters but their sale is not the main activity of the company, it is illegal to prohibit spectators from coming with the product from outside.

Therefore, if we ever find ourselves in the situation where we are prevented from accessing the cinema with our popcorn brought from home, we can demand that our rights be respected since an illegal action would be committed.
