COVID-19 seems to have just died down. We are slowly starting to live side by side with the corona virus. However, recently, people are again worried about the emergence of the Hendra virus.
The Hendra virus is also said to be more deadly than the Corona virus. This is as expressed by an epidemiologist at Airlangga University, Laura Navika Yamani. He also said the percentage of Hendra’s virus death rate was quite high.
“Fatality rate or a higher death rate. If COVID-19 is at the 3-4 percent level, the Hendra virus is at the 50 percent mortality rate,” Laura said as quoted from Unair’s official website, Thursday (2/6/2022).
As is known, the Hendra virus outbreak occurred in Hendra, a region in Brisbane, Australia. The virus was first isolated in 1994 from specimens taken during outbreaks of respiratory and neurological diseases in horses and humans.

Laura revealed that the Hendra virus is zoonotic, which means it can move from animals to humans. Usually the entry of this virus into the human body is found to be mediated by mammals.
“After being investigated, this virus turns out to be zoonotic, meaning it can move from one person to another host ke hostfrom animals to humans,” Laura continued.
“From bats directly to humans it is usually difficult, because of the nature of the hostits different. It’s easier to get in from other mammals, in this case horses,” he said.
Called more deadly than COVID-19, then what are the symptoms of the Hendra virus?
Symptoms of the Hendra virus can develop between five and 21 days after close contact with infected animals such as horses. This was reported by the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Here are the symptoms:
- Fever
- Cough
- Sore throat
- Headache
- Fatigue
The symptoms are serious, such as:
- Meningitis or encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) may develop
- convulsions
