Is Corona out of control? Thousands injured and a Chinese city conducting mass tests

Starting today, Wednesday, the Chinese city of Chengdu will conduct mass tests for its residents for the detection of Covid-19 and will continue until 27 Novemberaccording to a government notice issued late yesterday evening.

“In order to find out about the wounded as soon as possible andCut the transmission chain and limit the rapid spread of the epidemicHealth authorities have decided to conduct mass tests throughout the city from November 23 to 27.

This comes as the National Health Committee said on Wednesday that China recorded 29,157 new cases of the coronavirus on Nov. 22, of which 2,719 were symptomatic and 26,438 were asymptomatic.

China recorded 28,127 new infections the previous day, of which 2,225 were symptomatic and 25,902 were asymptomatic.

China recorded no new deaths, after registering two cases the previous day, keeping the total at 5,231.

As of Tuesday, mainland China had recorded 293,506 infections showing symptoms of the Corona virus.

Local government data indicated that the capital, Beijing, had 338 new infections with symptoms and 1,098 without symptoms. The previous day, 274 symptomatic and 1,164 asymptomatic cases were recorded.

And the local health authority in Shanghai, China’s financial hub, said it had recorded 15 cases with symptoms and 53 without symptoms, up from six, four cases with symptoms and 44 without symptoms a day earlier.

The world’s second largest economy adheres to a “zero Covid” policy, imposing crash measures, large-scale examinations and quarantines to control the spread of the epidemic, a policy that was successful in the early stages of the virus’s spread.

But the recent surge in infections is evidence of how resilient this policy is, as officials try to avoid a citywide lockdown, as happened in Shanghai for two months in April, as restrictions at the time undermined the economy of the financial center and its image internationally.

Although the capital has so far avoided a complete lockdown, some buildings have been locked down as residents queued for COVID tests, as many public places require residents to get a negative test result 24 hours in advance as a condition of the entrance.

At the end of the week, the authorities advised residents to stay in their homes and not to travel between regions.

Travelers arriving in the city underwent additional checks on arrival on Monday.

Many tourist spots, gyms and parks have closed, while major events such as concerts have been cancelled.
