Irish privacy watchdog investigates data breach of 5.4 million Twitter users | Technician

Irish privacy regulator DPC launched an investigation into a Twitter data breach on Friday. The personal data of around 5.4 million users of the social network were leaked.

Twitter may not have complied with European data protection rules, reports the DPC.

The data leak the DPC is now investigating dates back to the time before Elon Musk took over the social network. With the leaked data it is possible to link phone numbers or email addresses to usernames on Twitter.

The Irish privacy commissioner is conducting the investigation because Twitter’s European headquarters are in Ireland. If Twitter is found to have failed to comply with European rules, the DPC can impose a fine on the company.
