Ireland fines Facebook €265 million for data breach

Fortunately for users, countries are taking the protection of their citizens’ data more and more seriously and, for example, in Europe there is a strong General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) that companies must comply with and which also has similar aspects in other countries outside the euro area.

Without going beyond a few hours ago compared to Irish Data Protection Commission (DCP) announced a heavy economic sanction to Facebook (or rather its parent company, Meta) for failing to adequately protect the personal data of its millions of users, which is not the first time this famous social network has been splashed.

$265 million for not doing enough to protect data

The fine began in April last year when Facebook suffered a massive data theft that affected 533 million users, 11 million of them from Spain. Among these data are email addresses, name and surname, dates of birth and other sensitive information available to any criminal after this theft.

Sign the DCP, Facebook never took enough security measures to prevent this leakreason why a fine of 265 million euros due to the leak, the social network is forced to introduce a series of changes to improve security. If it is not done or if a data leak occurs again due to lack of measures, the fine for Mark Zuckeberg’s company will be even greater.
