Iranian President Invites UAE Counterpart to Visit Tehran

Iranian Tasnim Agency reported Thursday that Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi has extended an official invitation to his Emirati counterpart, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, to visit Tehran in the near future.

The Emirates News Agency also reported that Minister of State Khalifa Shaheen Al-Marar received the visit invitation letter addressed to President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed from Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi.

She said that the invitation was delivered by Iran’s ambassador to the UAE, Reza Amiri, without further details.

It is noteworthy that last April, Iran appointed its ambassador to the UAE for the first time in 6 years, amid the rearrangement of relations between the Gulf states and Iran.

The UAE downgraded its diplomatic relations with Iran in 2016, after Saudi Arabia cut ties with Iran.

Saudi Arabia’s move came in response to the storming of its embassy in Tehran by protesters angry at Riyadh’s execution of Shiite cleric Nimr al-Nimr, who was convicted of terrorism.

Business is more important than politics

However, the Iranian-Emirati disputes have other roots, as the two countries dispute over the islands of Lesser Tunb, Greater Tunb, and Abu Musa.

Yesterday, Wednesday, Iran announced the implementation of naval maneuvers on Abu Musa Island, and the Iranian navy said that protecting these islands is related to the honor of the country.

Despite the political dispute and the border dispute, the economic ties between the two parties have remained strong over the past decades.

Previously published figures indicate that the volume of trade exchange between the two countries amounted to $21 billion from March 2021 to March 2022.
