Iranian Navy Claims to Have Forced US Submarine to Surface in Strait of Hormuz

TEHERAN, KOMPAS.com – The Iranian navy claims it forced a US submarine to surface upon entering the Strait of Hormuz.

This was disclosed by Iranian naval commander Shahram Irani to Iranian state television on Thursday (20/4/2023).

“The US submarine approached while diving. However, the Iranian submarine Fateh detected it and maneuvered to force it to surface while passing through the (Hormuz) Strait,” Irani said.

“(The US submarine) has also entered our territorial waters, but has turned back after being warned,” Irani continued, as reported by Reuters.

Irani said the US submarine had made every effort and used all its capabilities to pass silently without being detected.

“We will certainly reflect to international bodies the fact that it has violated our borders,” Irani said.

Earlier this week, the US Navy stated that the guided-missile nuclear powered submarine, USS Florida, was deployed in the Middle East in support of the Fifth Fleet.

So far, there has been no immediate comment from Washington on Iran’s claims of forcing US submarines to surface.

In the past, Iranian troops and US troops have engaged in confrontations several times.

In early April, Iran’s navy said it had identified and alerted a US surveillance drone beyond the mouth of the Persian Gulf.

In 2019, Iran shot down a US drone that it said was flying over southern Iran.
