Iran reopens embassy in Saudi Arabia after 7 years

(PLO) – Iran has reopened its embassy in Saudi Arabia as the two countries re-establish bilateral relations after years of hostility.

The firm Reuters reported that Iran on June 6 officially reopened its embassy in Saudi Arabia following a recent agreement to re-establish bilateral relations.

The Iranian Embassy in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia) held a ceremony with the participation of dozens of diplomats and officials on the occasion of the reopening of the diplomatic mission after 7 years.

“We consider today an important day in relations between the Islamic Republic of Iran and Saudi Arabia,” Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Alireza Bikdeli said at the ceremony.

“Countries in the region will bring Allah’s will to stability, prosperity and progress through stronger cooperation,” Bikdeli added.

The official also noted that diplomacy is the best means for countries to have a common voice.

In March, Tehran and Riyadh agreed to re-establish bilateral relations after years of hostility through a China-brokered deal.

In 2016, Saudi Arabia (Sunni) severed ties with Iran (Shi’ite) after the attack on its embassy in Tehran related to controversy surrounding Riyadh’s execution of a religious leader. Shi’ite Muslim.

In 2019, Riyadh accused Tehran of launching missile and drone attacks on its oil facilities. The oil kingdom also accused Iran of attacking oil tankers in the Gulf. Iran denies the allegations.
