Iran frees French researcher Roland Marchal

The presidency announced it on Saturday. Emmanuel Macron calls on Tehran “to immediately release” Fariba Adelkhah.

Emmanuel Macron announced on Saturday March 21 that Iran had released French researcher Roland Marchal. “The President of the Republic is pleased to announce the release of Roland Marchal imprisoned in Iran since June 2019”, wrote the Elysée in a press release. Roland Marchal, sociologist, is expected in France, Saturday, at the beginning of the afternoon, specifies the presidency.

“The President of the Republic urges the Iranian authorities to immediately release our compatriot Fariba Adelkhah still imprisoned in Iran”, adds the Elysée.

The two researchers (members of CERI-Sciences Po) were arrested, according to Tehran, for crimes against national security. A reason that all those close to the couple reject.

Roland Marchal is a very renowned researcher. A specialist in civil wars in sub-Saharan Africa, he is particularly familiar with East Africa. Many researchers believe that Roland Marchal and Fariba Adelkhah were “scientific prisoners”.
