Iran and Saudi Arabia agree to restore diplomatic relations

On Friday, Iran and Saudi Arabia announced the resumption of their diplomatic relations, according to the official IRNA news agency, quoting a joint statement by the two countries, which severed relations in 2016.

“At the conclusion of the completed talks, the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia agreed to resume diplomatic relations and reopen embassies and representations within two months,” the statement said.

The agency stated that talks took place in Beijing between March 6 and 10 between the delegations of the two sides, headed by the Secretary-General of the Iranian Supreme National Security Council, Ali Shamkhani, and the Saudi National Security Adviser, Minister Musaed bin Muhammad Al-Aiban, and in the presence of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

The statement said that the foreign ministers of the two countries will meet to implement this decision and make the necessary arrangements for the exchange of ambassadors.
