Apple is Taiwanese manufacturer TSMC’s biggest customer. And, as we have already reported, chips for the next iPhone model are already in the works to equip the phones that will be introduced shortly.
However, recently an inspection revealed that the gas used by the manufacturer to produce its chips was contaminated.
As mentioned here recently, Apple will have ordered 100 million A15 Bionic chips from the Taiwanese giant TSMC. These chips will then integrate Apple’s next smartphone, the iPhone 13, which will soon be presented to the public.
The parts are all produced by TSMC’s famous “Fab 18” factory. This produces all chips for Apple iPhone, Mac and iPad equipment. The unit is mainly responsible for the production of M1, M2 and A15 Bionic chips.
IPhone 13 chip production suffers from gas contamination
Late last week, an inspection of manufacturer TSMC’s facilities revealed that the gas used for chip production was contaminated.
The production line affected by the contamination produces all the chips of the next generation of Apple. It manufactures the M1X chips, present in the next line of MacBook Pro, successors of the M1 and M2 chips, which are expected to be included in the new generation of MacBook Air. In addition to these, the highly anticipated SoC A15 Bionic is also in the pipeline. production that will power the new iPhone 13 series.
In an interview with Nikkei Asia, TSMC stated that “some production linesCompany, located in South Taiwan Science Park, received gas from potentially contaminated suppliers. However, he adds that they were ” quickly replaced by a new batch of gas« .
The Taiwanese automaker told Reuters the issue would not have a significant impact on operations. However, TSMC adds that “to ensure that there will be no problems with the quality of production, TSMC is currently carrying out rigorous monitoring operations ”.
Apple has so far not responded to requests for comment from Reuters. However, some sources consulted by the Nikkei site claimed that the contamination affected Apple’s chips in a “limited” way.
