Several consumers who bought Apple’s new iPad Air 2022 note that the back of this iPad is very thin. That makes the fifth-generation iPad Air feel a lot less robust. The iPad Air has been officially available since last Friday, and complaints are already pouring in on social media.

According to several Reddit users who bought the new iPad Air (5th generation), the aluminum panel on the back feels noticeably thinner than that of the previous iPad Air. If you push on the back, the image will be distorted. In some cases, the device would even make creaking noises.

I bought two blue iPad Air 2022 models, and I’m a bit shocked. The aluminum back plate is a lot thinner than on my iPad Air 4. You can almost feel the battery through the plate when you hold the device. Both iPads feel the same and make creaking noises when you hold them. This didn’t happen on the iPad Air 4. Both are going back, but is it just me? I also asked a second person and she felt it too.
The message has since been answered hundreds of times. Several people who also just bought the new iPad confirm the problem. The color of the housing does not seem to play a role. Someone on YouTube now has a video posted with the crackling sound.
Our experience with this iPad
The undersigned has also owned the new iPad Air since last Friday. When configuring the device, it crossed my mind: does it feel more fragile than the previous generation? This feeling occurred especially when setting up Touch ID, where you place your hand partially on the back of the iPad.
But I’ve always used my previous iPad in a case, and thought that might explain the difference. I quickly put the new iPad in a cover and then you don’t notice it anymore. Creaking noises have not been detected on our iPad. If you push hard on the back, the image will distort – but that’s something you shouldn’t do anyway.
