Investigated 40 possible cases of corona support fraud

In recent months, the service has received about 900 reports of possible tampering with the various types of measures that the cabinet has put in place. The reports concern fraud, abuse or other improper use, reports the NOS. The inspectorate did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

40 of these reports are being investigated and if the inspectorate finds enough evidence, prosecution will be initiated. The inspection itself is allowed to do that, under the supervision of the Public Prosecution Service.

Too low turnover passed on

The reports concern, among other things, possible fraud with wage sums, such as reporting higher wages than are paid, and reporting a lower turnover than was actually achieved. By doing this, companies can receive (more) NOW support.

Through this scheme, companies can be reimbursed up to 90 percent of the wage costs. The amount of the wage subsidy depends on the loss of turnover. In the first period of this measure, almost 140,000 companies made use of it, for a total amount of about 8 billion.

Reports about unsafe work

The 900 reports come from organizations such as the UWV and citizens, the NOS reports. Reports that are relevant to other services, such as UWV or municipalities, are forwarded.

Reports that indicate unfair, unhealthy or unsafe work are handled by another department of the inspectorate, the Supervision Department. In recent months there were more than 130 of the aforementioned 900. Action has now been taken on 45 of the 130 reports.
