Interview with Vojtěch Vrtiška: Winner of Bake the Whole Country Season 3

The third season of the popular television competition Czech Television Bakes the whole country is over. Even before the final, we interviewed the enthusiastic and creative confectioner Vojtěch Vrtiška from Mladá Vožice in the Tábor region. None of the spectators knew that he was aiming for the win.

Medic Vojtěch Vrtiška had several reasons to rejoice and celebrate on Saturday, March 16, because on his 22nd birthday, thanks to his bold and creative confectionary art, he was awarded the title of best baker. In an interview with Deník, he returned to filming, emotional moments during the show and revealed a little about his privacy and planned future.

What was your strongest moment in the competition? Did you expect to make it to the finals?
Of course, the final was a hugely powerful experience, enhanced by the fact that my closest friends were also enjoying it with me. Each of us had a certain chance to win. I tried not to admit that I was competing. I focused on turning in products that I would be happy with and that I wouldn’t be embarrassed about. That was my main goal.

What amused you the most? And why?
There were a lot of funny moments, so many times I was sorry that they didn’t even fit into the broadcast. Pinching just one would be hard.

What were you honestly sorry for?
The hardest thing for me was when Martinka and Martin dropped out. They were a great support for me.

How did you handle the jury’s criticism?
I tried to perceive all criticism as constructive feedback, which is important for me so that I can move somewhere further.

What did the competition give you and what did it take away? How did participating in the competition change your life?
Fortunately, the “what she gave me” item leads the way. She gave me new friends, a new outlook, huge experiences. Yes, it cost a lot of stress, time, it affected my studies and my personal life. But I wouldn’t change. After winning, I would hide the prize under the bed and move on, as before. I study during the day, I bake at night… actually, that’s how I function until now, only there are more eyes for which I can create, and for that I am very grateful.

What surprised you the most on the set? Do you have a pearl, a funny story, a strange coincidence?
I was personally surprised by the huge scale of the staff behind the entire competition and its teamwork.

What was easy for you and what was difficult for you?
I think that even in the competition you could see that I like to bake things that can be used to let off some creative energy. So whether individual cakes or mini-desserts were fine. On the contrary, the competition taught me to like, for example, strudels, with which I struggled a lot at the time.)

How do you perceive the responses of viewers, fans, friends and family?
There is a huge amount of feedback. I didn’t expect that at all and luckily they are overwhelmingly positive. I am very happy about it.

If you win, what will you do with the money you get, for example, are you going to have a party?
There will definitely be a celebration. Also because the broadcast of the final fell on my birthday.

A little more personal, many people ask if you have any love? Will you reveal something of your privacy?
But I’ll tell you. My current schedule, combined with studying medicine and baking, basically equals celibacy.

What are you planning for the future, do you want to continue baking on a more professional level?
I think it’s good to keep some secrets and surprises, so I can only say that no one will take away my baking again.

What is your dream profession considering that you are studying medicine at the UK?
I entered school with an interest in emergency medicine. But we’ll see. Maybe everything will change.

Vojtěch Vrtiška about himself and baking

“Since I was little, I’ve been messing around with my mother and grandmother in the kitchen. While other children played with stuffed animals, I had my wooden spoon that accompanied me everywhere, even to doctor’s appointments. I enjoy the multiple joy that one sweet product can give. Baking is a valve for me. It is creativity, self-realization. And when I’m sad, so is therapy.”

About myself: I am studying at the 1st Faculty of Medicine at Charles University. Thanks to my studies, I move between Prague and Mlada Vožica, near Tábor, where I have my family. I divide my free time between baking, calligraphy and horse riding.

About rituals: I don’t have rituals. Unfortunately. I don’t wash the oven with holy water or do a secret hula hula dance so my cream doesn’t get crushed. Maybe that’s why they sometimes collide.

About inspiration: I admire confectioners whose products show their personal signature and originality, which is not so common these days. But I perceive it, for example, with Cedric Grolet or Josef Maršálek. I myself try not to describe and keep my own style. Nature and horse riding inspire me a lot. One time, for example, I was hit on the head by an elderberry branch. And in addition to the lump, it also made an elderberry cake.

About reactions: Most often, I give my products to my mom to review. But I also took great pleasure in making my friends happy when I baked them a wedding cake.
