The novel coronavirus Sars-CoV-2 may also be transmitted to a large extent via aerosols, i.e. via the air. 236 scientists called in July in one open letter therefore by the World Health Organization (WHO) and other authorities to take the risk of transmitting Sars-CoV-2 through aerosols more seriously. Homes, choir rehearsals, clubs, visits to restaurants: Many studies have long indicated how dangerous this transmission route could be. Aerosol researcher Prof. Dr. André Prévôt from the Laboratory for Atmospheric Chemistry at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) is one of the scientists who signed the publication in the journal “Clinical Infectious Diseases”. As a reaction, intensive discussions are now taking place at the World Health Organization about the formulation of further recommendations on how to minimize contamination via aerosols. So far, the WHO had mainly assumed a droplet infection.
