Internationals Portugal donate European Championship premium to amateur football NOW

The internationals of Portugal donated money on Monday to support amateur football in the country. Players will hand in half of their earned premium to qualify for the 2020 European Championship.

The money comes on top of an emergency fund of the Portuguese football association FPF, which currently amounts to 4.7 million euros. On Wednesday, the football association decided to prematurely end all amateur competitions in Portugal because of the corona virus.

In addition to the selection of players from Portugal, the staff members of the national team and the board of the Portuguese Football Association also contribute half of their European Championship premium. It is not known for what amount it is exactly.

“We think it is important to send a signal that the players of the national team are with their minds on the people hard hit by the corona virus. They are also part of the football family,” the FPF wrote in a statement .

“In this spirit of camaraderie between professional and non-professional football, we as a team have decided to donate part of our premium to qualify for the 2020 European Championship. We are all Portugal.”
