General Andika Perkasa delivered two promises after he was appointed as Commander of the Armed Forces President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has recently replaced Marshal Hadi Tjahjanto who is entering retirement.
Andika’s two promises relate to the handling of the Papuan conflict and the internal reforms of the Indonesian military during his leadership period, which will only last for the next year.
“Internally, I have to admit. We have to improve a lot because that is something we have to be more careful about,” Andika said at a press conference at the Merdeka Palace, Wednesday (17/11).
In addition, Andika also admitted that he would still pay attention to the performance of the TNI. The goal, said Andika, is so that as an assistant to President Joko Widodo, he can handle matters related to the military.
“It can contribute to the government’s performance,” said the former Army Chief of Staff (KSAD).

In addition, Andika also promised to evaluate the TNI’s approach in dealing with the conflict in Papua. He admitted that he wanted to treat the Earth of Cenderawasih like any other province in Indonesia.
“I will evaluate, make changes in how we operate, not only in Papua, but also throughout the territory of the Republic of Indonesia,” Andika said.
The son-in-law of the former Head of the State Intelligence Agency (BIN) General TNI (Ret.) AM Hendropriyono admitted that he already has a new approach for Papua in the form of a big concept. However, Andika has not been pleased to reveal the concept.
He will announce the new concept of handling the Papuan conflict after his party conducts a thorough evaluation.
Andika only revealed that in general, the handling of the Papua conflict would be returned to the law. He hopes his soldiers will act according to the law.
“I want to use laws and regulations so that we don’t want to take action or take people’s authority,” said Andika.
President Joko Widodo has officially relinquished Hadi’s position as TNI Commander. Jokowi then inaugurated the Army Chief of Staff (KSAD), General Andika Perkasa as TNI Commander, last Wednesday.
