Bavaria’s Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann has visited Vogelsburg several times, regained his strength and enjoyed nature on the Main Loop. On Tuesday, for the first time after the general renovation and restructuring of the Vogelsburg area, Herrmann inspected the popular excursion location near Volkach, which has been owned by the Juliusspital Würzburg Foundation for nine years. Herrmann was accompanied by those responsible for the foundation, Walter Herberth and Dr. Rainer Schäfer.
Because the Juliusspital is under the supervision of the Bavarian Interior Ministry, Herrmann traveled from Munich to Würzburg. In the morning, the current difficult situation of the hospital due to Corona was highlighted. The focus was on the current situation of the hospital with the immense cost burdens. Other topics of conversation were agriculture and viticulture.
“The Vogelsburg is a special highlight for Franconian tourism.”

Because the Minister of the Interior is also the honorary chairman of the Franconia Tourism Association, Vogelsburg was on the program of the visitor tour in the late afternoon. “The Vogelsburg is a special highlight for Franconian tourism,” stated Herrmann. He was pleased that the Juliusspital had taken the future of Vogelsburg into his own hands and made the excursion site shine in new splendor. The corona pandemic is also an enormous handicap at Vogelsburg. By opening the beer gardens, Herrmann hopes that the Vogelsburg will gradually return to normal. The fact that larger wedding celebrations can soon be held there is an important perspective for further development.
Herrmann has been the Chairman of the Franconia Tourism Association for eleven years. “At that time, the representatives of the municipalities and counties recommended the office to me,” he looked back. “This is a voluntary and incredibly interesting job in our beautiful Franconia,” said Herrmann. He is happy to take care of Franconian concerns, even if the state minister is responsible for tourism, who is important for local development in this region. Winegrowing and tourism are of great importance in rural areas, “they mainly create jobs”.
Eight million euro renovation
Walter Herberth outlined the details of the Vogelsburg renovation, which devoured around eight million euros. The “complete package” with the former monastery of the Augustine sisters, the Church of the Assumption, the hotel and the restaurant was worth it. “The step was the right one,” the senior nursing director said.
With the Tacke couple, the Juliusspital found committed tenants for hotel and gastronomy and with Pastor Bernhard Stühler a motivated pastor who regularly celebrates Sunday services (8 a.m.). Together with MdL Barbara Becker (“The Vogelsburg rectifies the tourist business from the old town of Volkach”) and Volkach’s new mayor Heiko Bäuerlein, Herrmann took a tour of the changes on the Vogelsburg since his last visit several years ago.
