More and more newly graduated nurses prefer to work on a temporary basis rather than in a hospital. They thus earn a better living by working less. The system is very expensive for public hospitals, which are desperately understaffed.

In front of the nursing shortagehospitals are increasingly calling on temporary workers. 25,000 nurses would only work on short contracts. In a specialized agency, more than 1,200 replacement nurses arrive every day. The candidates are numerous and sometimes very young. A 20-year-old student, graduating next year, refuses to sign a CDI at the hospital. “For someone like me who wants to move when she wants to, it’s complicated”she says.
In the next room, the financial question takes precedence. “In a fixed position, at the start of a career, we would start more at 1800 [euros] salary, while in acting with bonuses, we can go to 2,200-2,500 [euros]“says a young woman. At the Millau hospital (Aveyron)temporary workers touched five times as incumbents. To remedy this, the management is therefore trying to favor more stable profiles.
