Insurance Fraud Barometer: Organized Networks and Social Perception Among Drivers

Man, under 30 years oldunemployed or with a precarious job, or professional who around 40 and who are looking for extra money or not having to pay for a repair. In both cases, they have a vehicle that is between 11 to 14 years and they issue an insurance report in which they try to include damages caused in another accident. That is the one considered as fraud type and the most common profile among those behind these deceptions, which are currently “at historical highs.” This is indicated in the VII Insurance Fraud Barometer prepared by Direct linein which it is pointed out that in the province of León these parts were the 7.2 percent of the total of those issued, which implies that just over seven out of every hundred were classified as false. This figure, referring to the years 2021 y 2022is below the national average, which stood at 8.8 percent. Mar Garre, director of People, Communication and Sustainability at Línea Directa insurance company, points out that this increase – the numbers at the national level are multiplied by five those of 2009 – is due on the one hand “to the improvement in detection means thanks to the artificial intelligence», which allows identifying parameters, pointing out possible connections of those involved and uncovering inconsistencies in their statements and, on the other hand, also «a rebound has been detected caused by the loss of purchasing power by citizens as a consequence of inflation” among the most frequent reasons.

In Castilla y León, according to Garre, «Soria, Zamora, Salamanca and Segovia are among the Spanish provinces with fewer fraud attempts to insurance”, among the most ‘legal’ when it comes to reporting a blow or accident with your vehicle. In the first, the report states that the percentage with respect to the total is 3.4 percent; in the second 4.9; in the third five percent and in the fourth 5.4 percent. Burgos, with 8.4 percent of false reports, is the community territory with the most scam attempts, although its average is still below the national average. In PalenciaFor their part, these accounted for 7.5 percent of the total; in Valladolid 6.7 percent and Avila six percent. At the national level, the highest proportion of frauds was detected in Cadizwith 11.6 percent of the total; Málagawith 10.8 percent and Cantabria, with ten percent. Meanwhile, at the other end of the list is Teruelwhich with 3.4 percent equals the low figure of Soria.

Although individual insurance fraud constitutes, according to the report, “a reprehensible practice,” what most worries insurers are the organized networksgroups of criminals who commit “carousel” frauds different companies with the aim of obtaining compensation declaring false injuries. «In the last two years more than 200 organizations dedicated to these practices,” says Garre. These networks are often connected to much more serious crimes, are run by two or three ringleaders and tend to defraud, on average, about 8,300 euros per case, about 10 times more than the deceptions of private drivers. There are mainly two types: networks that purposely cause hits with real damage or those that simulate accidents or robberies that never existed and, from Línea Directa, they warn: “the networks organized for insurance fraud are not simple. picaresque“They are very dangerous organized clans and are normally linked to other types of serious crimes.”

Social perception

Regarding these practices, Garre points out that “there is still some justification” on the part of citizens. “In fact, the 40 percent of drivers justify these behaviors and the 63 percent of motorists “Those who have committed fraud do not regret having done so at all,” he comments regarding the data. As worrying information, he also highlights that 13 percent of drivers, the equivalent of 3.6 million, they claim that they have been offered to participate in a fraud. Mainly, an acquaintance or a familiar (six percent), followed by a workshop or an expert (four percent). 15 percent of drivers, the equivalent of 4.1 millionaffirm that they would participate in fraud if they proposed it and another ten percent, the equivalent of 2.7 million, admit that they would fake an injury in exchange for money.

In addition to car insurance fraud attempts, the barometer does the same analysis with home insurance fraud attempts. «The confinement caused a specific increase in fraud attempts, although they later dropped to usual levels, below three percent. The most common deception in home insurance is to declare damages prior to taking out the policy and give false claims,” explains the Director of People, Communication and Sustainability of Línea Directa based on the data. The average cost of these frauds is 556 euros19 percent less than in the previous barometer carried out.
