The Bundesliga match between TSG Hoffenheim and FC Bayern had to be interrupted twice on Saturday afternoon. The reason for this were swore songs and insulting posters against the TSG majority owner Dietmar Hopp, which the Bayern supporters had hung up in the guest sector.

When some Bayern supporters held up a banner against Hopp for the second time in the 77th minute, referee Christian Dingert interrupted the game in Sinsheim and instructed the players to temporarily leave the field. After a fifteen-minute break in the game, the two teams returned to the pitch, but only continued to play symbolically. The players pushed the ball back and forth in the center circle until the final whistle in the 90th minute; Hopp and the Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge stood together on the sidelines and applauded. Many spectators in the stadium showed solidarity with the disparaged hopp and applauded the players on the field for their protest. The 6-0 victory for the Munich team was neglected.

Rummenigge shows solidarity with Hopp

Before the second interruption, several Bayern players, their coach Hansi Flick, sports director Hasan Salihamidzic and board member Oliver Kahn had gone to the fan curve with the Bayern supporters and asked them to remove the banner.

A defamatory poster had already been seen in the guest sector. This prompted Referee Dingert to interrupt the game for the first time in the 67th minute. The Bayern supporters protested with the banner against the collective penalty pronounced by the German Football Association (DFB) against the fans of Borussia Dortmund, who had repeatedly insulted Hopp in the past and therefore would not go to BVB away games in the next two years Sinsheim allowed to travel. Bayern’s CEO Rummenigge Hopp comforted him in the stands and hugged him during the first interruption.

After the game, Rummenigge said that the block where the defamatory posters had been seen was filmed. “At the latest today, the moment has come when the entire Bundesliga must act against these chaos,” said Rummenigge. «We all have to stand together. We have closed our eyes to what is happening in the curves for far too long. That is the ugly face of football. » The agitators have discredited FC Bayern and “had lost nothing in a football stadium,” said Rummenigge. The club will do everything possible to make those responsible responsible.

Interrupted game in Dortmund

The match between Borussia Dortmund and SC Freiburg also had to be interrupted on Saturday afternoon due to insults against Hopp. At the beginning of the second half, parts of the Dortmund appendix started chanting songs. Thereupon the referee Robert Hartmann had the game interrupted for a few minutes and ordered a stadium announcement in which the BVB supporters were asked to refrain from their swearing songs. Otherwise there is a risk of the game being abandoned. After this incident, the game that should win Dortmund 1-0 could continue.

After the game, BVB sports director Michael Zorc called for drastic consequences for those who spread hatred in football stadiums: «So far, the Bundesliga has not got a grip on it. I think we have now reached a point that is no longer tolerable. » Freiburg coach Christian Streich said: “What has happened in this country in the past ten months in terms of agitation, attacks on politicians, on Jewish institutions and now on a Turkish shisha bar is extremely dangerous.” Streich spoke out clearly in favor of a zero-tolerance policy against agitators in stadiums: “If it continues, I’ll be the first to support a game being abandoned.”

The match on Saturday evening between 1. FC Köln and Schalke 04 suggested that the abuse against Hopp and the DFB had been coordinated by the ultra groupings of several Bundesliga clubs. Because even during this game, fans of 1. FC Köln were hostile to Hopp with a banner. The game was only started again after the halfway point. Cologne coach Markus Gisdol and sports director Horst Heldt had previously rushed to their own supporters and asked them to hang up the banner. 1. FC Köln won the game against Schalke 3-0.
