Instagram makes TikTok competitor Reels available in the Netherlands | NOW

Instagram will make the Reels feature available in the Netherlands from Wednesday, a Facebook spokesperson confirmed after the announcement from the company. Just like on the competitive social medium TikTok, Instagram users can use Reels to record short videos with music or audio from other users’ Reels.

Popular Reels from other users will be shown in the Explore tab after the Instagram app update. Reels videos from Instagram users can end up there if they have their account public.

Users with a private account can also create reels. The videos will then only be shown in the regular overview of photos, IGTV videos and advertisements. In that case, the reels are only visible to followers. Also, the audio cannot be reused by other Reels makers.

Users can make a Reel via the camera button in the Instagram app. Instagram provides video makers with effects and tools, such as a countdown clock, to spice up videos. Also, previously made videos can be uploaded from the camera roll of the smartphone as Reel.

Although Reels will be available from Wednesday, the feature may not be visible in the Instagram app’s camera option yet. The Facebook spokesperson said on Wednesday evening that users may have to wait until Thursday before they can use Reels.
