The Healthcare and Youth Inspectorate opens an investigation into the Rotterdam nursing home De Leeuwenhoek. Almost half of the elderly in the dementia department of the care complex on West-Kruiskade have died. They all presumably succumbed to corona.

It concerns a total of fifteen elderly people who have since died. The disease has now also spread to two other departments. Employees and family members had raised the alarm with NRC Handelsblad about the high number of deaths in the nursing home.
The Inspectorate writes in a statement that the past few weeks have spoken with all organizations that offer nursing care. “Humanitas has also been in contact with the infections at the De Leeuwenhoek location. Humanitas takes the large number of infections very seriously and is now investigating the cause of this. The Inspectorate is closely associated with this investigation.”
Health Minister De Jonge warns that it is too early to draw conclusions about what exactly happened. “There are signals about hygiene regulations that would not have been sufficiently observed. I have no reason to assume that this is the case. We must first wait for the facts,” he tells the NOS.
