Inside the Lucrative Side Hustle of Nannying for the Ultra-Wealthy

It seems to be beautiful|Helping billionaires “get together” with an hourly salary of up to 1,300 HKD

The 34-year-old Gloria Richard has a special job, with an hourly salary of up to US$167 (about HK$1,300), including board, lodging and air tickets. As an “Off-Broadway” performer in New York and Virginia, Richard only works for two months and can afford all the expenses for the whole year-her job is to help the super rich Take care of the little ones.

This job allowed her to earn nearly US$2,000 (about HK$15,600) a day, work about 12-15 hours, take private jets and yachts, and drive Porsches and Teslas. But for this “Xun Gong”, she also needs to bear the emotional price of taking care of those children who are neglected by their parents, have complicated families, and are neurotic and difficult to get along with.

Although she stated that her role was to be a nanny, Richard said it took her a while to really understand what she was doing.

Some of Richard’s clients are world-renowned entertainers, and one of them has been surrounded by bodyguards and makeup artists for a long time. Even as a babysitter, she can only see the backs of clients from a distance during the three-month employment period. She has seen wealthy clients buy entire villas just to stay for a few days; a steak worth US$3,200 (about HK$250,000) can be eaten with just one bite.

As the nanny of these clients, what she needs to do is not to prepare three meals, drive the door or do housework, but to coordinate different relationships and even meet the emotional needs of children like a mother.

“I’ve had a lot of parents in my interviews tell me, ‘We’re looking for someone to take care of our kid, he’s going to inherit our trust fund, and you can drink with him when he grows up.’” These parents would even use Richard’s name Write it in the “Guardian” column at the school.

not as good as imagined

Richard grew up with eight siblings and got her first professional acting opportunity at the age of 14. She moved to New York more than a decade ago to work in the children’s department at the Reebok Sports Club, which was acquired by Equinox, and wealthy members began using her as a babysitter.

At that time, she was not familiar with the fees and arrangements for nanny, so she found a professional agency in New York, Madison Agency.

Richard shared with CNBC that sometimes these billionaires would suddenly not pay her wages or even directly cut off her international phone plan, making her unable to communicate with the outside world. They would also completely ignore the previously agreed working hours and force her stay longer. Sometimes these wealthy people don’t realize that they are not paying on time or that Richard is temporarily unable to pay the bill; sometimes it is their wayward way of expressing dissatisfaction.

“I’ve tried being in New Zealand, and my employer suddenly told me they had no cash to pay my wages,” shared Richard. “But I knew they were actually trying to tell me that I was unhappy with my job performance.” She pointed out, This is one of the reasons she needs an agency.

Dealing with these “valued customers” is not easy. But Richard admits that after working for the super-rich for more than a decade, she feels more sympathy than anger. Most of these super-rich were born in well-known and wealthy families. They often try to live an ordinary life, but because of their popularity, they cannot escape the attention of the public, and they are often attacked and abused at will.

Jackie Mann, director of operations at Madison Agency, said Richard had the “extraordinary character” needed to work with billionaires. Taking care of children is not difficult, but it is the patience, understanding and thoughtfulness that Richard possesses that make her suitable for this job.

“Behind the media lens, I have seen these families divorce or the death of family members. Sometimes they will turn to me for comfort, and then they may suddenly attack me in anger and grief.” As a black woman , it is even more difficult to take care of these mostly white families. Sometimes when the children grow up to six or seven years old, they will start to discriminate against her.

Therefore, Richard will establish strict boundaries between work and life. The lucrative income, travel experience, and opportunity to care for these emotionally neglected children kept her in the job. But outside of work, she never hesitates to spend money and time on enjoying smoothies and massages as a way to take good care of herself.
