Spectacular, extremely expensive and often quite exaggerated: luxurious houses and apartments on the real estate market fascinate – especially people who cannot afford them. Penthouses with incredible views are particularly popular, such as the Bentley Residences and the apartments at the Waldorf Astoria in Miami.

But it usually gets really expensive in a very specific city: New York. In numerous Tiktok videos, YouTubers and real estate dealers like Erik Conover show the most beautiful and expensive penthouses in the city. In the comments, users dream about what it would be like to live in such an apartment – and are amused by the fact that they will never be able to afford something like that.

“Told me how poor I was in six languages”

This is also the case under a video about a $28 million penthouse with a view of Central Park. User Fiona Anastasia writes: “I would like to go on holiday in an apartment like this at least once – but I would prefer to live there.” Others question how practical such an apartment is: “Three floors? I hope it has its own elevator” and “How do you clean the windows?” are comments that appear several times. User Keiner05482, on the other hand, has realized how rich some people are: “Bre just told me in six different languages how poor I am.”

It’s even more expensive: Enes Yilmazer, another creator who shows spectacular apartments on his channel, stands in a $250 million penthouse in a video. It is on the 131st floor and you can see the whole of Central Park from the balcony. Here too, the users dream. ClashRoyal writes: “Is it also possible to pay in installments, €100 per month?”

“Can I pay this with Klarna?”

Similar jokes can be found under almost every one of these videos. The Canadian video producers from DronehubMedia show a $45 million apartment in the same area, where users ask about paying in installments – or like Hina: “Can I pay this with Klarna?”

There are also some hateful voices: people complain that the furnishings look like they come from a cheap manufacturer, and many users are upset that the owners of such apartments don’t really appreciate them – or do they are never home anyway. There is also occasional discussion about the housing shortage in New York.

Fascination luxury

And yet, each of these videos has several million views. But why does luxury fascinate us so much? There are mutliple reasons for this. One is the so-called Veblen effect, a term from economics: It describes the phenomenon that the demand for luxury goods continues to rise, even if they become more expensive – because consumers want to improve their status by buying these goods.

There is also the so-called snob effect: This means that certain things only become interesting with exclusivity. Watch and handbag manufacturers, for example, take advantage of this fact by selling limited versions and thus creating an artificial shortage. If only a few people can afford something, it appears more desirable to many people.

And last but not least, it’s simply about dreaming: Just as some people like to scroll through the offers of expensive hotels or luxury brands, others enjoy unusual residential properties.
